Antique RARE 1800's Japanese Wooden Hand Painted Diplomatic Desktop Name Trade Sign For your consideration is a unique and very interesting antique find from the early Meiji-period Japan - a desktop name sign of a man named John O. Hall Made of wood, with a dark black finish Inscribed up front, by hand with the name of the bearer - in English (a Gothic font) and Katakana Japanese script - in green After the end of the Edo period, between the years 1853 and 1867, Japan ended it's isolationist foreign policy (Sakoku) and changed from an internationally isolated feudal Tokugawa shogunate to the modern empire of the Meiji government. It was in this period when many foreigners arrived to the islands for business and diplomatic duties. This plaque most likely belonged to a British or American tradesman or diplomat, who had an office in Japan Antique, late 19th/early 20th century, Meiji period Japan (1868-1912) PLEASE SCROLL DOWN THE PAGE FOR MORE PHOTOS!
